Lent 2010

Calendar of events

“Lent” is derived from the Middle English “Lente” which means “springtime”.  It is the 40-day period of repentance and renewal preceding Easter. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends with the Easter service.
Lent is a special time for:
--meditation, prayer and penitential practices
--increased understanding of Christ’s sacrifice and Resurrection
--recommitment to the Christian life
This 40-day period brings to mind the 40 days that Jesus spent in the wilderness, fasting and praying before beginning his public ministry. It was during this time that he was tempted by the devil. Moses also spent 40 days fasting and praying during the time when God gave him the Ten Commandments. Elijah fled for his life through the wilderness, fasting 40 days and nights until he came to Mt. Horeb. There, God appeared and instructed him on how to overcome his enemies. May this season of Lent be a meaningful journey for you.
*Lenten devotionals are available in the narthex of the church.

Services and Events this Lenten Season

Special Offerings During the Season of Lent
FOOD FOR THOUGHT AND A LITTLE SPARE CHANGE
During this season of Lent, as Christians and United Methodist, let us help brothers and sisters in need. Our current economic problems have left many without enough food to eat. The shelves of our food banks and pantries are bare. In addition to our regular food collection on the first Sunday of each month which goes to ABCCM, we are encouraging each of you during Lent to bring a can of food and a little spare change each time you come to the church. If you are meeting at the church to discuss the Bible, attend WOW, handle business matters of the church, or deal with whatever we put our minds to as Christians, please bring a can of food and a little change to go into our milk jugs that will be placed around the church. Canned food will be delivered to Calvary Episcopal Church, which is opening a food pantry for the Fletcher area and has asked for help from the churches in the Fletcher community. The spare change will be collected by our children to give to The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), meeting the needs of those both nationally and internationally who are hurting and hungry. As a part of a loving and generous Church, let us take this opportunity to help others.

A service where we as Christians commemorate the supper Jesus shared with His disciples before the crucifixion, when Jesus washed the disciples’ feet and instituted the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper.  The church is stripped as a vivid and dramatic way of showing the desolation and abandonment of the long night in Gethsemane and what followed.

A way of individually participating in the passion of Christ as a part of Holy Week  services. It imitates a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, as was often done by early Christian pilgrims, especially to the place of Christ’s redemptive suffering.
